We are total fans
We currently own a fine collection of paintings by local artist Diane Gravelle. Acquired over the years since 2014, these pieces contribute greatly to the beauty of our decor and almost every room in our vast residence contains at least one of them. Not only do I love what Diane Gravelle paints, I also love the person she is. And in my desire to make her known through my B&B's activities, I came up with the idea of organizing an exhibition of her works, for the pleasure of my guests and other visitors.
Today, I prefer authentic artworks to reproductions, but when I was younger, reproductions were the only thing I could afford, and it was with the reproduced works of great painters like Dugas, Renoir Picasso and others that I began to surround myself with Art. Of course, art is expensive even if the vast majority of artists cannot make a living from it, which is paradoxical. That said, you can make happy discoveries and acquire beautiful pieces from talented artists for a very acceptable price. This is why it gives me such pleasure to introduce you to a very talented artist like Diane.
Virtual exhibition
The exhibition of Diane Gravelle's work was to be launched at the same time as the party given in honor of the opening of the B&B, scheduled for May 6th (and two years late!). But because of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic and the fact that we are currently closed until further notice, the B&B's official opening celebration has been postponed to next year. I have therefore decided to launch the exhibition virtually, using the Web to publicize the paintings.
In the following story, you will learn more about my meeting with Diane and the paintings I acquired from her, which are presented below (except for two). Next, you will find the pieces for sale that are part of this exhibition. New paintings will be added in the near future.
If you love the arts and dream of acquiring an authentic painting without having to mortgage your house, you will surely be delighted to purchase a painting by artist Diane Gravelle. She paints in all kinds of styles, whether it is still life, landscapes, characters or abstract art. And of course, there is something for every taste and budget.
Red poppies - how it all began
Diane Gravelle is a painter who lives in Gatineau. The very first time I saw her art, I was at Café Moca Loca in Aylmer (sector West of Gatineau), now known as Café Mulligan. When I entered the little shop, my eyes immediately got captured by the red poppies who seemed to dance in the wind. Without hesitation, I told the waitress that I wanted to purchase the painting and asked to be contacted by the artist. Little did I know that I was starting a great adventure and friendship with Diane.
Pathway under the trees
This painting of the poppies now hangs over the bed headboard in room Outaouais, and I often get guests who specifically ask to book "the room with the red poppies". When I went at Diane's home to get my painting, a few weeks later, she invited me in and showed me her other pieces, a few dozens of them. I was amazed by the fact that each piece was painted in a different style, as if tens of different artists were exposing together. I was impressed by her talent. At the time of my visit, she was in the process of painting a piece for her husband, which, later on, became mine. Hence, I became the proud owner of a second painting from Diane, almost still wet and right on to my taste. I got it a really nice frame and it is now hanging beautifully on the top of my bed headboard.
Winter birch
Diane knows that I like trees, especially birch trees, so she decided to create a new painting that would nicely complement the one in my bedroom, but in a different style. So she made this one and added a touch of red because she knows how I love that color. It was such a fantastic surprise when she revealed it to me! I love how she painted the snow on the ground. I can spend long minutes loosing my thoughts in this picture, and imagining that I'm in it. The painting Winter Birches, as I like to call it, hangs on the wall of the little sunroom located beside the Lounge. Because this little room is most likely used in the summertime, I have the joy of admiring it every single day during that period of year, while I set up the terrasse for the day for my guests to enjoy. And when it gets really hot, I simply dream of beautiful winter days...
The two make a pair
My story with Diane doesn't end there. During the next year, I bought three more paintings from her, each one very different form the others. One of the paintings gives a touch of joy to the bathroom located between rooms Kingsmere and Meech. However, I found that there were still too much plain walls in that room, so last spring, I bought my eighth painting from Diane, and hung it over the bath. Together, these two pieces add so much to the bathroom by giving it vitality as well as a little luxury.
Red flowers in vase
The fifth painting, ma favorite one, even though I love them all, hangs on one of the walls in room Gatineau. The flowers in the vases fascinate me because it seems as though they come to life. The texture of the petals seem so real. Of course, the picture doesn't do justice to the painting. One will have to book room Gatineau to admire it.
Andy Warhol
The sixth painting purchased from Diane is a completely different style and has no comparison to what I have seen from her. It brings me to American Artist Andy Warhol's art. Diane's painting was perfect for the hallway between rooms Kingsmere and Meech. It's just too bad that only these guests get to admire it.
Special order: Lady preparing for bath
The seventh painting was a special order of mine, for my previous house's master bathroom cathedral wall. That wall, above the roman bath, was huge and I wanted a large painting to occupy the whole space and add pizzaz to the room. I therefore ordered a painting from Diane, that she would have to create from scratch. To create this new piece, we had many discussions over my taste in colors, styles, textures. To inspire her, I sent her several pictures of paintings that I liked. And this is how the new painting came to life. The Woman preparing for bath was a total surprise, when Diane revealed it to me. Splendid! It was perfect for the wall and fit beautifully in the bathroom. Unfortunately, we moved less than a year later, but the painting followed us and now hangs on the wall of the hallway leading to rooms Gatineau and Outaouais. It happens quite often that guests react with positive comments when they see it for the first time. But before you ask me, rest assured, it isn't me on the painting...
Fall birch
Finally, the ninth and tenth paintings have a funny story. They were part of the collection of paintings that Diane had chosen to expose at Auberge Tom B&B. However, when we hung them side by side, I literally fell in love (you know me, birch trees, fall colors...) and so I decided to keep them for myself. How selfish! Well, not really, considering that now, all my guests can enjoy them in our Lounge!
Every single painting purchased form Diane over the years is the reason why I take such pleasure to introduce you to Diane Gravelle's art work!
The selected paintings for sale are exposed in the B&B's shared rooms for everyone's enjoyment, and to make sure that everyone has access to them. On your next visit, expect to fall in love with one of them! Price vary between $125 and $600. Diane Gravelle's art work will be exposed at the B&B until Spring 2021.
If you reside in Canada, but not in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, we can ship your painting with Canada Post at your expense.

The beginning of her enthusiasm for painting was born in the United States when she was introduced to decorative painting during a holiday. The blossoming of her passion took birth there, has manifested itself and has been steadily growing ever since. Over the years, specific training courses have been added according to the needs of the moment. She describes herself as follows:
"In my paintings, I try to illustrate what charms me, soothes me or transports me. For me it is a question of transposing on canvas the vibrations I feel when I see a landscape, a scene or even a travel memory. I am looking for a pictorial vocabulary with which I can communicate my emotions of the moment in the eyes of others.
Painting offers the possibility to be alone in one's bubble, alone with oneself, in agreement, in harmony with one's spirit creative. I love diversity, so I don't paint a lot of paintings with the same theme, I remain eclectic. My interest has always been to different, unusual, particular orientations. That's how my artwork doesn't come from the same repertoire. I feel the need to burst out, to combine elements from one set to the elements of another set to make it a creative product. Like a butterfly I'm picking from flower to flower. I like to explore colors, mediums, various subjects, the diversified techniques. My father was an artist: painter and theatre actor. No doubt he left me a small piece of his DNA."
On October 7, 2006, Diane opened the creation centre at "Aux Berges de l'Art", which was located at 651 Jacques Cartier Street on the banks of the Gatineau River, in one of Gatineau's heritage sectors. Located in the father's house, it had the pleasure of offering artists from the Outaouais region an opportunity to exhibit their creations. It also offered a place for exchange between artists and the general public through a vernissage, a poetry evening, a conference, a book launch or any other event related to the arts, such as collective ant thematic exhibitions. At the same time, the centre offered workshops to the public: oriental painting, mixed painting, jewellery workshops, plastic arts, mixed techniques, comics, pastel, creative writing, scrapbooking, totem masks, etc.
"Aux Berges de l'Art" subsequently offered training to elementary school teachers in order to equip them in the plastic arts to help them meet the requirements of the Department of education for the development of plastic arts skills in elementary school children.
Diane is a trained nurse. She has completed a bachelor's degree in Education, a Master's degree in Nursing and a PhD in Psycho-education. Her master's thesis and dissertation subjects of PhDs deal with creativity in the individual. In the course of her studies, she became aware of the brain being the seat of imagination, intuition, feelings and impressions while realizing that the left hemisphere was doing reference to the logic and rationality of things.
Now retired, she prioritizes activities in the right hemisphere of her brain to benefit her creations.
