As far as I can remember, the local French cuisine restaurant to Ottawa-Gatineau has always been l'Orée du bois (translates into Edge of the Wood). Nested in Gatineau Park, in Chelsea, virtually at the edge of surrounding woods, the restaurant has developed its reputation for more than thirty years thanks to chef-owner of the time, Guy Blain. In 2009, chef Jean-Claude Chartrand (finalist in Combat des villes, 2016 Edition) and spouse Josée took over the restaurant by becoming the new owners and have succeeded to perpetuate and enlarge this establishment's high reputation by winning several distinctions and prizes.
For my part, l'Orée du bois remains my favorite restaurant of all times for many reasons. First, the food is awesomely good at a very reasonable price. The menu offers "fine French cuisine" delicacies adapted to our local and North-American reality, with a perfect blend of classics and current trends.

Also, service is impeccable while remaining accessible. Every single person who waits our table is extremely nice and knowledgable about the menu and wine list. The ambiance is always very pleasant and is made both by the rustic décor and the French songs that enliven all dining rooms. This establishment is far from stilted; clients in jeans dine next to those in suit and tie.
Finally, each phase of the experience, from the first greetings to goodbyes, is filled with a great feeling of contentment, thanks to caring staff and engaged and passionate owners.
On your next visit to Chelsea or even the greater Ottawa-Gatineau region, treat yourselves to Orée du bois. Further more, as clients of Auberge Tom B&B, you get a free drink. And for those who like to explore their fine wine list, mostly private importations, take note that we offer a shuttle to and from the restaurant. :-)
